LSC’s Life Skills Glossary is a timely resource to enrich and accelerate the conversation around making life skills a part of mainstream education for India’s young people. A comprehensively defined set of skills, developed in the Indian context, is necessary for providing a common vocabulary for the life skills ecosystem. All the life skills mentioned and explained are human capabilities that any young person, regardless of their socio-economic background, gender, sexual orientation or neurodiversity, could aspire for.
Life skills are abilities that enable a person to navigate a range of life contexts with a sense of personal confidence, social conscience and
professional competence.
They are developed through the use of processes that are inclusive and sensitive to individual, local and regional diversity.
Why do we need a Glossary?
LSC’s Life Skills Glossary is much needed to accelerate the conversation around making life skills training a part of mainstream education for India’s young people. A comprehensively defined set of terms and definitions makes it easier to have insightful conversations and discussions with a commonly understood vocabulary.
Key Considerations for Examining the Glossary
Care has been taken to ensure that all the skills mentioned and explained are human capabilities that any young person, regardless of their socio-economic background, gender, sexual orientation or neurodiversity, could aspire for. It behoves every educator to endeavour to foster these life skills in all their learners. The language used is therefore objective throughout, deliberately gender-neutral, and implies inclusion. Any special provisions that different groups of young people require could be indicated in the life skills curricula and assessment tools that arise from this glossary.
How was this Glossary developed?
LSC’s India Glossary of life skills is a list of life skills that emerged from an extensive review of 63 SEL, life skills, and 21st-century skills frameworks, globally covering 7 regions with a special focus on work done in and on India. Out of the 63 frameworks, 26 were chosen considering their focus on the Indian landscape and shared with the EASEL Labs of Harvard School of Education for mapping. The definitions for each of these skills have been developed based on literature reviews of relevant research papers.
Know More
This glossary is a reference point for the development of assessment tools by LSC partners to measure specific skills in young people, as well as, a contextualised glossary of life skills for each state, using inputs from LSC partners. It can also be the basis for designing contextualised curriculum to teach life skills in the different states of India. Most importantly, the glossary can be a vital resource for teachers and NGO partners to alter learning processes and experiences they design to enable the authentic nurturing of life skills in young people.
India Glossary mapped by EASEL Labs at Harvard University
The LSC India Glossary of Life Skills was informed by skills across 26 Indian and International frameworks. These frameworks were mapped by EASEL Labs at Harvard University for LSC to understand how the life skills in these frameworks relate to each other. The definitions of the life skills in the India Glossary have taken this mapping into consideration and adapted as well as contextualised them for India. You can find the mapping back of the life skills in the LSC India Glossary on the Explore SEL website by EASEL Labs.
