Empathy

noun | [ em-puh-thee ]

Empathy is the ability to emotionally understand what other people feel, see things from their point of view and context, imagine ourselves in their place and respond appropriately. Empathy is relating to others with acceptance, understanding, and sensitivity to their diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, and taking action accordingly.

Empathy plays an important role in being a socially competent person with meaningful social relationships. The ability to empathise is important for promoting positive behaviours towards others, and facilitating social interactions and relationships, thus motivating altruistic behaviour. This skill also makes us challenge intolerance, bias and stereotyping when we see it.

Empathy In Action

The person will be able to:

  • Listen well, pay attention to non-verbal communication and pick up subtle cues.
  • Understand others’ perspectives and feelings.
  • Show sensitivity towards others.
  • Help other people based on their understanding of their needs and feelings.
  • Respect and relate well to everyone, regardless of their diverse backgrounds.
  • Alter the way they interact with others to fit with the others’ diverse needs and feelings.
  • Appreciate others for their strengths and accomplishments.
  • Provide constructive feedback to others to help them improve.
  • Put the needs of others first and look for ways to improve their situations.

इतर व्यक्तींना काय वाटतंय, याचं भावनिकरित्या आकलन करण्याची, त्यांच्या दृष्टिकोनातून आणि संदर्भातून गोष्टी पाहण्याची, त्यांच्या जागी स्वतः असल्याची कल्पना करण्याची आणि योग्य पद्धतीने प्रतिसाद देण्याची क्षमता म्हणजे समानानुभूती होय. समानानुभूती म्हणजे इतरांना स्वीकारणे, त्यांचे आकलन करणे, त्यांच्याशी जोडले जाणे, त्यांच्या पार्श्वभूमी, अनुभव आणि दृष्टिकोन यातील वैविध्याप्रती संवेदनशील राहून त्यानुसार कृती करणे.

अर्थपूर्ण सामाजिक नातेसंबंधासह सामाजिकरित्या एक सक्षम व्यक्ती होण्यात समानानुभूतीची महत्त्वाची भूमिका असते. इतरांविषयी सकारात्मक वर्तणूकीला प्रोत्साहन देण्यासाठी आणि सामाजिक परस्परसंवाद आणि नातेसंबंध निर्माण करण्यासाठी, म्हणजेच परोपकारी वर्तणूकीला चालना देण्यासाठी समानानुभूती क्षमता असणं महत्त्वाचं आहे. असहिष्णूता, पक्षपात आणि पूर्वग्रहदुषित विचारसरणी यांना आव्हान देण्यासाठीदेखील हे कौशल्य आपल्याला मदत करते

हे कौशल्य आत्मसात केलेली व्यक्ती पुढील गोष्टी करण्यासाठी सक्षम झालेली दिसते.

  • मनापासून ऐकणे, अशाब्दिक पातळीवरील संवादाकडे लक्ष देणे आणि सूक्ष्म संकेत लक्षात घेणे.    
  • इतरांचे दृष्टिकोन आणि भावना यांचे आकलन करणे.
  • इतरांविषयी संवेदनशीलता असणे.

सहानुभूति

सहानुभूति एक ऐसी योग्यता है जो भावनात्मक रूप से यह बताती है कि दूसरे कैसा महसूस करते है तथा, उनके नजरिये से सोचना सिखाती है। हम अपने आप दूसरों की जगह पर रखकर उसी के मुताबिक प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त करते है। दूसरों की विविध्यपूर्ण पृष्ठभूमि, अनुभवों, दृष्टिकोणों को मद्देनजर रखते हुए उसका स्वीकार, समझ तथा संवेदनशीलता से रखकर कार्य करना सिखाती है।

सामाजिक संबंधों का ध्यान रखते हुए यह कौशल सामाजिक रूप से सक्षम बनाता है। यह जीवन कौशल दूसरों के प्रति सकारात्मक व्यवहार को बढ़ावा देता है। यह सामाजिक संवाद तथा संबंधों को बढ़ावा देती है और परोपकारी व्यवहार करने के लिए प्रेरित करता है। यह कौशल रूढिबध्य धारणाऔ, असहिष्णुता, पूर्वाग्रहों को चुनौती देने में सक्षम बनाता है।

सहानुभूति इस कौशल के व्यवहार में

व्यक्ति यह करने में सक्षम हो सकेगा :
• व्यक्ति अच्छे से दूसरों की बातें सुनता है, तथा अशाब्दिक संचार पर ध्यान देता है। सूक्ष्म संकेत को जानता है।
• दूसरों के नजरिये तथा भावनाओं को समझता है।
• दूसरों के प्रति संवेदनशीलता रखता है।
• दूसरों की आवश्यकताओं तथा भावनाओं के अनुसार मदद करता है।
• विविधतापूर्ण पृष्ठभूमि के बावजूद भी अन्य लोगों को सम्मान देकर उनसे जुड़ता है।
• दूसरों की आवश्यकताओं तथा भावनाओं के अनुसार उनसे बातचीत करने में बदलाव लाता है।
• दूसरों की उपलब्धियों तथा क्षमताओं की सराहना करता है।
• दूसरों की प्रगति / सुधार के लिए उन्हें सकारात्मक / रचनात्मक फीडबैक देता है।
• दूसरों की आवश्यकताओं को प्राथमिकता देते हुए उनके जीवन में / स्थिति में सुधार लाने के तरीके ढूँढता है।
