Participation is the ability to contribute actively to processes and situations, influencing tasks done and decisions taken. The ability to participate effectively is important for personal empowerment and agency, as well as the development of self-efficacy and social connectedness. Participation also leads to higher self-esteem and creativity.

In an educational setting, Participation encourages active learning, promotes equity amongst learners, fosters a sense of ownership of the school and empowers communities. Within a family, participation leads to stronger relationships and autonomy. In a socio-political setting, it allows children to make their concerns heard about the world they will inherit.

विविध कामे आणि त्यावर परिणाम करणाऱ्या प्रक्रिया तसेच निरनिराळ्या प्रकारच्या परिस्थितीमध्ये सक्रियपणे योगदान देण्याची क्षमता म्हणजे सहभाग कौशल्य होय. अशा प्रकारे परिणामकारक रीतीने सहभागी होण्याची क्षमता स्वतःला तर सक्षम करतेच व त्याचबरोबर स्वतःची कार्यक्षमता आणि सामाजिक संपर्क वाढविण्यासाठी उपयोगी पडते. सहभागातून उच्च स्तरावरील स्व प्रतिमा निर्माण होऊन सर्जनशीलतेला चालना मिळते.

शिक्षणक्षेत्राचा विचार करता, सहभागातून सक्रिय अध्ययनाला प्रोत्साहन मिळते. विद्यार्थ्यांमधील समतेला उत्तेजन मिळते. त्यांच्या मनात शाळा आपली आहे अशी भावना निर्माण होते, तसेच हे कौशल्य समाजाला सक्षम करते. कुटुंबाच्या पातळीवर विचार करता सहभागामुळे नात्यांची वीण घट्ट होते तसेच स्वायत्तता वाढीस लागते. सामाजिक राजकीय व्यवस्थेमध्ये विद्यार्थी भविष्यात ज्या जगात प्रवेश करणार आहेत त्या जगाला त्यांच्या मनातील चिंता ऐकवण्याची संधी देते.

एक शैक्षिक स्तर पर सहभाग कौशल सक्रिय रूप से सीखना, सीखनेवालों में समानता को बढ़ावा देना, पाठशाला के प्रति अपनापन और समुदायों को सशक्त करनाआदि पारिवारिक क्षेत्र में सहभाग कौशल मजबूत रिश्तों, संबंधों तथा स्वायत्ता का नेतृत्व करती है सामाजिकराजनैतिक स्तर पर बच्चों को योग्य बनाती  है जहाँ पर दूसरो द्वारा उनकी आवश्यकता और चिंताओं को सुना जाये और वह दुनिया की विरासत को साथ लेकर आगे बढ़ सके
