विविध कामे आणि त्यावर परिणाम करणाऱ्या प्रक्रिया तसेच निरनिराळ्या प्रकारच्या परिस्थितीमध्ये सक्रियपणे योगदान देण्याची क्षमता म्हणजे सहभाग कौशल्य होय. अशा प्रकारे परिणामकारक रीतीने सहभागी होण्याची क्षमता स्वतःला तर सक्षम करतेच व त्याचबरोबर स्वतःची कार्यक्षमता आणि सामाजिक संपर्क वाढविण्यासाठी उपयोगी पडते. सहभागातून उच्च स्तरावरील स्व प्रतिमा निर्माण होऊन सर्जनशीलतेला चालना मिळते.

किसी भी कार्य की प्रक्रिया में और स्थितियों में सक्रिय योगदान देना तथा निर्णयों तथा गतिविधियों को प्रभावित करना ही सहभागिता कौशल है व्यक्तिगत सशक्तिकरण और अभिकता का भाव तथा सामाजिक जुड़ाव और आत्म प्रभावकारिता के लिए सहभागिता का कौशल महत्वपूर्ण है सहभागिता एक उच्चस्तरीय आत्मसम्मान और सृजनात्मकता की ओर अग्रसर करती है

एक शैक्षिक स्तर पर सहभाग कौशल सक्रिय रूप से सीखना, सीखनेवालों में समानता को बढ़ावा देना, पाठशाला के प्रति अपनापन और समुदायों को सशक्त करनाआदि पारिवारिक क्षेत्र में सहभाग कौशल मजबूत रिश्तों, संबंधों तथा स्वायत्ता का नेतृत्व करती है सामाजिकराजनैतिक स्तर पर बच्चों को योग्य बनाती  है जहाँ पर दूसरो द्वारा उनकी आवश्यकता और चिंताओं को सुना जाये और वह दुनिया की विरासत को साथ लेकर आगे बढ़ सके
