Literacy is the ability to read and write, whereby we can effectively understand and use written communication in all media, print, and electronic. It is a means of expression and communication, through a variety of media. It includes our ability to understand, evaluate, use and engage with texts, in order to develop our knowledge, potential and participation in society.

We need literacy in order to engage with the written word in everyday life. Besides functional use, literacy plays a vital role in transforming us into socially engaged citizens. Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively, and understand the issues and trends that are shaping our world.

  • Read and comprehend written material on any media.
  • Write to communicate what they know.
  • Select, read, and view with understanding a range of literature, information, media, and visual texts.
  • Interpret, select, and combine information, using a variety of strategies, resources, and technologies.

समजपूर्वक वाचायला आणि लिहायला येणे म्हणजे साक्षरता होय. यामुळे आपण छापील आणि दृकश्राव्य यासारख्या सर्व माध्यमातून लिखित संवादाचे प्रभावीपणे आकलन आणि वापर करू शकतो. विविध माध्यमांच्या उपयोगातून हे एक व्यक्त होण्याचे आणि संवाद साधण्याचे साधन आहे. यात आपले ज्ञान, कौशल्य आणि समाजातील सहभाग यांचा विकास करण्याच्या दृष्टिकोनातून आपले आकलन, मूल्यमापन, लिखित मजकूराचा उपयोग आणि सहभाग या क्षमतांचा समावेश होतो.

आपल्याला दैनंदिन आयुष्यात लिखित मजकूर समजपूर्वक वाचण्यासाठी साक्षरतेची गरज आहे. पण दैनंदिन उपाययोजने पलीकडेही समाजाचा कृतीशील घटक म्हणून उत्तम नागरिक तयार करण्यात साक्षरतेची अतिशय महत्त्वाची भूमिका आहे. वाचन, लेखन आले म्हणजे चालू घडामोडींशी जुळवून घेणे, परिणामकारक संवाद साधणे तसेच आपले विश्व अधिक समृद्ध् करणे शक्य होते.

हे कौशल्य आत्मसात केलेली व्यक्ती पुढील गोष्टी करण्यासाठी सक्षम झालेली दिसते.

  • कोणत्याही प्रसारमाध्यमातील लिखित साहित्य वाचून त्याचे आकलन होणे.
  • साक्षरता हे अभिव्यक्तीचे एक प्रभावशाली माध्यम आहे.
  • साहित्य, माहिती, प्रसारमाध्यम आणि दृश्यमान मजकूर यांची योग्य निवड करून तसेच आकलनासह वाचून योग्य दृष्टिकोन विकसित करणे.
  • विविध कार्यानीती, स्रोत आणि तंत्रज्ञान यांचा वापर करुन माहितीचा अर्थ लावणे, निवड करणे आणि आवश्यकतेनुसार माहितीचे एकत्रिकरण आणणे.

साक्षरता उस स्तर पर पढ़ने और लिखने की योग्यता है जिससे हम सभी मीडिया ( प्रिंट और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक ) में सम्प्रेषण को प्रभावी तरीके से समझ और लिख सकते हैं। यह विभिन्न मीडिया के माध्यम से अभिव्यक्ति और सम्प्रेषण एक साधन है इसमें हमारे ज्ञान और क्षमता को विकसित करना शामिल है। इसमें समाज में प्रतिभागिता को समझना, मूल्यांकनकरनाऔरअध्ययनसेजुड़नेकीक्षमताभीशामिलहै।

प्रतिदिन के जीवन में लिखित शब्दों से परिचित होने के लिए इस कौशल की आवश्यकता होती है। कार्य के परे साक्षरता हमें  सामाजिक रूप से जुड़े हुए नागरिक  तैयार करने में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। पढ़ना और लिखना, समाज के मौजूद घटनाओं का ज्ञान रखना, प्रभावशाली ढंग से बातचीत करना, समाज को प्रभावित करने वाले मुद्दों को समझना आदि मे साक्षरता महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है।

• लिखित सामग्री को किसी भी मीडिया पर पढ़कर समझना।
• जो मालूम है उसे संप्रेषित करने के लिए लिखना।
• साहित्य सामग्री को समझाना, मीडिया व दृश्य पाठ को समझ के साथ चयन कर पढ़ना।
• अनेक तकनीकों नीतियों और साधनों का प्रयोग कर जानकारी का चयन, संयोजन और व्याख्या करना।
• विभिन्न पाठ्यवस्तु पर गंभीरता से प्रतिक्रिया देना , शैली, बनावट और समझ के अनुसार भाषा का प्रयोग करना।
