ASSESSMENTS WORKSHOPS

Life skills are important to empower children and young adults to prepare for their future. They are also an integral part of ensuring their wellbeing. One of the challenges in developing life skills is lack of enough contextualised and focused assessment tools, These tools can help provide useful information to education systems as they devise life skills policies and interventions.

Assessment Tools Validation Workshops

LSC Assessment Tools were validated for use by experts in Mizoram, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttrakhand. The experts were briefed on the assessment tools, their purpose and their applicability. The workshop’s first session involved LSC collaborators’ presentations on assessment tools’ design approach and the tool creation process. The latter half of the workshop entailed detailed group discussions and insightful conversations on all items in the tools, to provide in-depth review, assessment, validation, and feedback on the practicability of the assessment tools.

The Life Skills Collaborative (LSC) hosted a three-day “Assessment Tools Validation” workshop at the Rajasthan State Council of Educational Research and Training (RSCERT) office, Udaipur, Rajasthan, from September 20-22, 2021. The tools were evaluated by 18 experts (from various DIETs and school teachers across Rajasthan) and RSCERT officials.

During the workshop, experts were briefed on the assessment tools – their purpose and applicability. The first session of the workshop involved LSC collaborators’ presentations on the assessment tools’ design approach and the tool creation process. The latter half of the workshop entailed detailed group discussions and insightful conversations on all items in the tools, to provide in-depth review, assessment, validation, and feedback on the practicability of the assessment tools.

LSC received positive feedback on the nature, rigour, and research processes, which is an integral part of the creation of the assessment tools. Government experts shared constructive inputs on assessment parameters like language, ease of understanding by students, clarity and relevance with respect to social-cultural context.

Life Skills Collaborative’s (LSC) Assessment Tools Validation Workshop (Uttarakhand)

Life Skills Collaborative (LSC)’s Assessments Tools were optimistically received and acknowledged for their effectiveness during a 3-day workshop in Uttrakhand. The workshop, hosted in Dehradun from 4th to 6th October 2021, was attended by 21 experts from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), and DIET departments.

During the workshop, experts were briefed on the assessment tools – their purpose and applicability. The workshop’s first session involved LSC collaborators’ presentations on assessment tools’ design approach and the tool creation process. The latter half of the workshop entailed detailed group discussions and insightful conversations on all items in the tools, to provide in-depth review, assessment, validation, and feedback on the practicability of the assessment tools.

In the 3-day intensive workshop, the 21 experts were divided into 3 groups for an all-inclusive tools discussion. Every expert had constructive feedback on the tool design, to a more detailed review of each tool item. In fact, the thorough validation process was well-appreciated, and was called, “interactive, specific, and systematic”, and the tool-building process “rigorous.”

Life Skills Collaborative hosted a two-day engaging workshop in Maharashtra from December 7-8, 2021. The workshop, hosted at the Shantilal Muttha Foundation Office, Pune, introduced LSC’s Assessment tools to experts from 11 State Council of Educational Research and Training and District Institute of Education and Training. Our collaborators – Shantilal Muttha Foundation, Centre for Science of Student Learning, Dream a Dream, The Teacher Foundation, International Center for Research on Women, and Sattva Consulting – made the Pune workshop a successful interaction for all those involved.

During the workshop, we received some interesting insights from different participants. They shared views on the need for life skills and the effectiveness of our Assessment tools.

The workshop, organised by Mizoram State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in Aizawl from November 30th to December 1st, 2021, saw representation from 11 assessment experts from Samagra, the Education Department, SCERT, DIET, NGOs, and Mizoram University. The workshop was coordinated by Magic Bus, LSC’s government engagement partner for Mizoram. Members from four other LSC partner organisations – Sattva, International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), Centre for Science of Student Learning (CSSL), and Dream a Dream – also attended the workshop.

When asked about the learnings of the workshop, DIET experts said “The assessment tools were very comprehensive, concise and insightful. The dimensions being taken from respective areas made the tool rich and took into consideration the understanding and capacity of children to respond to the assessments”. Experts from Samagra also expressed support for the tools by saying “Getting reliable and exhaustive data on life skills will help state education departments strengthen their decisions around life skills education and educate the community regarding the importance of life skills”.
